John Rambo is so well known that he has become a household name. This fictional character, who makes his first appearance in the novel "First Blood" by David Morrell, is part of the Vietnam War sub-genre of war movies. The movie follows the titular character's struggle to survive after being left for dead by U.S. Marines during combat in North Vietnam, and his quest for revenge against them when they return to the United States. It was first released on June 26th, 1982 and stars Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo and also features Richard Crenna as Colonel Trautman, Dolph Lundgren as Sgt. Andrei Tereshkova, David Caruso as Will Teasle and Brian Dennehy as Sheriff Will Teasle. It is one of the most popular movies in the series with audiences also, earning over $125 million in the box office. John Rambo, played by Sylvester Stallone, is a former Vietnam War military Army veteran who has returned to the United States after the war only to be persecuted for his time spent fighting overseas. As he was leaving Vietnam he tried to save face by stealing an officer's sword which was later discovered by U.S. soldiers and returned to him before they left him at a prison camp in Southeast Asia for stealing government property. Rambo was then tortured for two months by the soldiers stationed at the prison camp until an American rescue team stumbled upon him and freed him. During his time spent in the Southeast Asian prison camp, Rambo had learned how to survive in hostile territory through harsh conditions that included starvation, disease, torture and other forms of physical suffering. After freeing Rambo, the rescue team took him back to their base where he was greeted with hostility by most of its members who were mostly military personnel who had served during the war. Amongst this group included Colonel Samuel Trautman played by Richard Crenna, who had known Rambo since his first tour of duty during the war. Trautman was the only person to show Rambo any courtesy and respect upon his return from the war. Trautman later retired from the military and started a life in Montana where he opened a survival school where he trained civilians in how to survive in harsh environments similar to those that Rambo experienced while being captured. The surviving soldiers who had served at Rambo's prison camp during Vietnam found out where Rambo was living and journeyed out to Montana with the intention of tracking him down and bringing him back for extradition while also taking him back into custody at their base. They found Rambo working as a farmer at Trautman's survival school, but they were unable to arrest them due to Trautman's interference. The surviving soldiers later return to their base where they planned out a raid at Trautman's survival school to arrest Rambo and Trautman once again. During the raid, Trautman and Rambo were able to escape and move forward with their plans of leaving Montana and starting a new life together. The surviving soldiers report back to their base, but the Colonel in charge of the operation decides that they should bring Trautman and Rambo back into custody by sending another group of soldiers out into Montana. cfa1e77820
